Deuteronomy 6
| LOVE THE LORD |
Congratulations! You’ve made it to week five of BibleTogether! This week, we are going to complete our journey through the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, also known as the five books of Moses.
Shema
Deuteronomy 6 is one of the most important chapters in the entire Old Testament. Throughout Israelite history, it was the most memorized and recited passage. A faithful Jew would recite Deuteronomy 6:4 two times every day.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
There is nothing more central to the Christian faith than that there is no God but the Lord. The Lord, Yahweh, as revealed in the scriptures, is the one and only God. Now consider the Apostle Paul’s reflection on this passage in 1 Corinthians 8:6 just after confessing a few verses before that “there is no God but one.”
yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
This is an amazing confession that Jesus is the very Lord that has been confessed throughout all of history as the One True God.
The Greatest Commandment
Some of you may recall when Jesus was asked what is the greatest command in the Law (Matthew 22:35-40). Jesus responds by recalling Deuteronomy 6:5.
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Truth in Life
The words that follow show the people the way that they are to remember the truth of who God is in all of their life. In every part of life, when sitting and walking and lying down and rising, at all times the people are to remember the truth of God.
It is my hope that BibleTogether is something that God is using in your life to help you to remember, and perhaps discover for the first time, the trurth of who God is.
