| RESURRECTION OF JESUS |

Verses 7-8 are the key to this passage.

Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.

Jesus knew the crucifixion was coming. The cross was the whole purpose for Jesus’ coming. And Jesus knew that the resurrection was coming.

The resurrection is essential to understanding the Gospel. Death is the curse for sin. But resurrection is evidence that God’s justice has been completely satisfied. The sacrifice of Jesus was sufficient to cover the sins of those for whom he died. For all who place their faith in Jesus, their sins are forgiven on the cross. For all who place their faith in Jesus, they receive the hope of resurrection with him.

Road to Emmaus

The story of the two men on the road to Emmaus is one of my favorite stories in scripture. I love the way that they say, “Didn’t his words burn in our hearts when he spoke.” But do not overlook the origin of the words that Jesus spoke. It says that he began with Moses and the prophets. He showed how these spoke of himself. That is, the words of the Old Testament bear witness to Jesus as well. The words of the Old and New Testaments speak with a harmony of voices about the One Messiah.
